GT40 heads require special attention when selecting valve springs for high lift, high performance Hyd Roller Cams. Since these heads come with different tip length valves, retainers and springs from the factory, care must be taken when selecting valve springs, retainers and locks. Unlike some of the earlier SB Fords where the tip lengths were the same for both intake and exhaust, GT40 heads use two different lengths. Since the goal is to use the same high performance springs on all sixteen valves, special retainers and locks are required to make it possible. Our drop in valve spring kit is specially engineered to fit GT40 heads. It comes with select retainers and locks designed to fit GT40 staggered tip lengths. Fits GT40 heads without additional modifications. Designed for mild to moderate high performance Hydraulic Roller cams, our kit will handle most cams up to around degrees duration. We'd be happy to verify compatibility. Works great with many of today's popular performance cams. Suitable for 1. Vsk7h works with a large number of hi performance street roller cams. I didn't notice the advise to mill the stock heads so the inside spring had clearance which resulted in 16 bent pushrods, one broken rocker and a couple broken springs during the motor break in. My own fault but make sure to note the possible need for machine work. Having my heads ported, a valve job done, and the valve seats refinished. Going to install these springs with 1. Will upload photos when completed! Purchased these for my supercharged notch. Showed up in the mail two days after ordering. Thanks AM. Great product and a must have for an after market cam. These springs will require milling for use on GT40P heads. Will this springs work with my xehr cam,1. These springs will work but may require some milling. We do recommend new steel retainers. Otherwise, you will not need any additional parts. This is for my And i was wondering Is this all i need for installation? Or do i need to purchase valve spring retainers and valve springs locks? Or can i use the stock retainers and locks? We recommend new steel retainers with these springs, other than that, you should be good to go. Some milling of the heads is required for installation. These Comp Cams Valve Springs would not be recommended for use with a stock cam due to their design, but will work well with the E The total amount needing to be milled from the heads can vary due to oem production tolerances in the heads. A qualified machine shop can determine how much must be milled and perform the necessary machine work. We recommend new steel retainers with these springs. They do fit in the spring pocket and can be setup for cams up to about. AFR 's should not require milling, however depending on the cam you are using these may not be adequate. Last month, we showed you a buildup on Tim Moore's budget 5. We pulled it from the junkyard and added a Lunati hydraulic roller cam, some head mods, and an intake and carburetor and made a very impressive real street horsepower. An important part of keeping the investment in line was retaining the production GT40P heads. These are Ford's best-flowing production cylinder head for the pushrod 5. Due to space considerations, we didn't have room in the first story to detail all the tricks that went into these heads. Plus, as is usually the case, there are several ways to achieve those goals. The trick is to upgrade the valvesprings so the entire valvetrain can handle the lift and loads imparted by the longer-duration, higher-lift cam. But there's more to this than just swapping springs. Let's start by reviewing the evolution of these heads. The GT40 valve sizes are 1. There were other changes to the GT40P, including a slightly smaller combustion chamber reduced from 65 cc to roughly 60, which benefits the compression ratio. One of the biggest changes to the P heads was relocating the spark-plug placement to improve combustion efficiency. Unfortunately, this causes header-to-spark-plug interference when using standard small-block Ford headers with the GT40P head. There are a few headers out there that are designed specifically for the GT40P head, so you might want to check on that. The GT40P incorporates a rotator into the exhaust valve retainer, which, through a series of ball bearings, allows the valve to rotate slightly each time it opens. This helps prevent exhaust valve seat erosion. The valve rotators are thicker than standard valvespring locators and retainers, though, and require a spring with a shorter installed height on the exhaust valve. The installed height is the distance from the valvespring seat in the head to the underside of the retainer. On these heads, the installed height of the intake valvespring is around 1. Because of this discrepancy, the exhaust valve's valve-lock groove must be shorter to allow sufficient room above the retainer for the guided rockers. This reduces the actual distance between the bottom of the retainer and the top of the valve guide and seal, so this combination can't accommodate any kind of performance cam with more than 0. The production Ford GT40P iron head offers decent flow as a stocker, but it needs a few modifications in order to accommodate more valve lift.

So I ended up buying some GT40 heads not p's for my What would be the best cam and springs to use for these heads in a Windsor? No not a roller. Well its a reco stockso I'm pretty sure its a flat tappet. Any cam your going to need to change the springs - the factory ones would be shot. The Gt40 is the best factory iron head but not great compared to after market so be realistic. I would run a roller cam using linked bar lifters. So my recipe; 1 A set of Howards Linked bar lifters. So the Cam needs to help. Note: I am assuming mild set up due to gt40 head selection. I suggest TFS upgrade kit. Quote from: boofhead on January 18,PM. Sure it will work - same as the one I have on my shelf. Note: You still need to upgrade the springs. Your right - it is the Chev version - I assumed Ford since this is what we have been discussing so I did not look that closely. So the kit is no good to you. The springs I all ready suggest TFS upgrade kit - see above point 3.

The heads and springs are brand new. That's as far as I probably will push this engine unless I get really excited out there. My Performer cam probably isn't good for much more than that even though my bottom end is good to about rpm. Last edited by wgt; at AM. Pics in my album! Total molestation! Build Pics in 3 albums! What lift cam? Stock GT40P springs will be about the same as 5. Not close to the HO springs. Otherwise, I went with the tfs valve spring kit. What's New? Log in. Remember Me? GT40P, B Results 1 to 18 of Thread: GT40P, B If it were my car I would upgrade the springs. If you don't replace the springs, you might be fine, or you might smack pistons and valves. The B cam is pretty low lift, but duration is a big player when it comes to valve float, and it has plenty of duration. I agree, upgrade. The B cam is. I agree. Springs are much more important than most people realize. I bent some valves before so I have first hand experience. Do it once right or do it twice. Its a gamble. How lucky do you feel? Hotchkis suspension. Crane also has a kit with locks and seals I think, though I have no clue what the part number is. You might consider replacing just the exhuast springs, to my understanding they are the weaker of the two. They are the regular GT40s not the Ps. I planned to home port them and upgrade the valve springs. I bought the ones that Crane Cams website recommends part and the locks and retainers. I have read since then that there is some weird locks or something on the stock valve springs and it requires special valves, locks, or something. If anyone could shed some light on this and tell me if what I have bought will work would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, that is more detail on what I have heard. What locks did you get for the exhaust valves. That is all I need because I have the retainers and locks like in the kit already. Thread Tools. BB code is On. Smilies are On. Trackbacks are On.
